Moles - Nemesis of the Manicured Lawn
WTH happened to my lawn?? Moles… ugh.
Moles. Rarely, if ever, do you actually see them. You don’t hear them. You don’t even smell them. But, oh boy, you sure know when they’re around. From an ever so subtle raised tunnel to a virtual mine field of mole hills, the diminutive little mole is a common source of frustration for many property owners. Lawns, gardens, and flowerbeds seem to get the most raised eyebrows along with a “WTH” type of muttering, but pastures, farm fields, golf courses, and even the occasional old country house earthen basement is a target area for the crafty little diggers to show up and reek havoc. And when they do show up, it’s usually to stay. Left unchecked, those mole tunnels will have your property looking like a giant 500 piece puzzle board featuring mole hill accents that feast on lawnmower blades. Now if that’s the yard look you’re going for and you happen to find enjoyment repeatedly sharpening dull blades while hunkering down in a dimly lit basement, then the mole is definitely your spirit animal. For the vast and overwhelming majority of property owners, however, there is only one thing they want a mole to be… gone.
Physical, empirical, undeniable… PROOF.
So, how to deal with this nemesis of the manicured lawn. Personally, I prefer actually KNOWING that my efforts are producing the desired results in the quest to stop further destruction by the mole army. And by knowing I mean seeing - physically seeing - the source of the endless tunnels and never ending dirt mounds that torment landscapers visually brought to justice. That means trapping. No poisons. No fumigation techniques. No chemicals. No gimmicks. No guessing. If you’re not physically removing the offending culprits you might as well just wish them away, IMHO. And if you’re hiring a professional to help you control nuisance moles wouldn’t you want to know for certain that your mole problem has a verifable solution? Trapping moles provides proof that a mole is gone and will stay gone. Other moles may eventually move into the vacated territory, but you’ll know for certain it’s not the ones that were trapped and removed… gone is truly gone. No other technique or method of mole control can consistently validate that claim.
